Sea-fari & snorkeling exploration

Embark on a sea excursion focused on experiencing the wonders of marine wildlife.

The Sea of Cortez, renowned for its biodiversity, is home to over 900 fish species and nearly 40% of the world’s marine mammals. On our Open Ocean Safaris, we encounter an incredible diversity of marine wildlife. We often see regular visitors such as different kinds of whales and dolphins depending on the season, various types of turtles, sharks, sea lions, mobulas rays and pelagic fish. Yet, we also encounter some surprising guests. Beaked whales, sperm whales, orcas, false orcas, pilot whales, Risso’s dolphins, and numerous other cetaceans pass through this area, leaving us in constant awe.

As we venture out, embrace the ocean’s surprises without fixed expectations. The sea guides our journey, revealing its treasures at its own pace. When conditions permit, you may even snorkel alongside these incredible creatures.

Flying Mobulas & Megafauna

Imagine being surrounded by thousands of mobula rays (and no, they don’t stink!), looking like flying angels…

Every year, the coast of Baja California Sur becomes the stage for the biannual migration of thousands of Mobula munkiana, also known as ‘tortilla’ rays. These rays create a breathtaking spectacle as they glide in unison and leap up to two meters high. In the Sea of Cortez, you can observe them along with four other species of mobulas, especially during their summer courtship. Best season : between April & June

Our adventure begins early to maximize the chances of spotting these rays, and then we continue exploring the surrounding open sea. Depending on the season, you may also encounter whales, dolphins, sea lions, turtles, sharks, seabirds and, as always, other surprises!

Join us for the world’s largest mobula ray migration—an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

SARDINE RUN & STRIPED MARLIN MIGRATION

The Sardine Run is an awe-inspiring natural spectacle where millions of sardines embark on an annual migration along the Pacific Ocean. From October to December, these shimmering schools of fish move in unison along the coast, attracting an incredible cast of marine predators. Dolphins, sharks, sea lions, Bryde’s whales (and sometimes even humpback whales), marlins, and dorado all converging for a grand feast!

This thrilling event is nature’s ultimate buffet, and each year brings its own surprises. We have several departure points along the Pacific coast, and we’ll choose the best one based on recent movements and weather conditions.

Discover the wonders of Gordo Banks, an awe-inspiring seamount located seven miles offshore from San José del Cabo marina, renowned for its remarkable marine biodiversity. This submerged mountain rises from the depths of the ocean, with its highest peak situated 31 meters (102 feet) below the surface, creating a breathtaking underwater landscape that draws marine life from far and wide. The rocky surface of the seamount is adorned with black and wire corals, offering a vivid tapestry of marine flora.

Their presence invites larger pelagic predators such as tuna, wahoo, marlin, silky sharks, and tope sharks. Graceful rays glide through the waters, adding to the allure of this marine sanctuary.

Plunging to depths of up to 40 meters, this dive offers an exhilarating adventure for experienced divers. The sheer abundance and diversity of marine life in these waters make Gordo Banks a true paradise for underwater exploration. Final Touch:

A great attitude! 😊

We can’t guarantee specific wildlife sightings—Mother Nature has the final say. But don’t worry, the Sea of Cortez is teeming with marine life, promising unforgettable experiences. Bring your good vibes and let the magic unfold!

Swimming with marine life is an exciting part of our trips, but the safety and well-being of the animals are our top priorities.

Whales: Swimming with whales is prohibited in Mexico. If your dream is to swim with whales, we recommend joining us on an excursion in Norway or Polynesia to fulfill that experience.

Dolphins, Sea Lions, Mobula Rays, Turtles, Marlin, and other Fish: The guide and captain will assess the animals’ behavior and inform you if swimming is possible. Our aim is to ensure you have a memorable experience while always prioritizing the safety and comfort of marine life. If the animals show signs of wanting to be left alone, we will immediately respect their space and cease interactions.

The Sea of Cortez is a rich tapestry of marine life, showcasing a diverse array of species. Humpback and Grey whales are primarily visible in winter (December to March), while blue whales pass through in April-May, and Bryde’s whale during the summer (June to September). Mobulas can be spotted between April and June, and sea lions are present year-round. The whale shark, the largest fish in the world, and the manta ray, known for its large wings and spectacular jumps, are also notable inhabitants, particularly during the summer. Dolphins include several resident species, and sea turtles are frequent visitors. Sharks can be seen all year long, depending on the species ! This magical sea often surprises with many other fascinating marine creatures throughout the year like sperm whales, orcas, false orcas, pilot whales, mola mola… but they are unpredictable !

For our day trips in La Ventana, or Baja California in general, we partner with local captains and use their traditional fishing “Panga” boats. These sturdy boats are equipped with sunshade and dry storage to keep your belongings safe. While some boats can accommodate up to 10 people, we typically limit the group size to 6-8 people per trip unless more are requested. The boats used for week-long expeditions outside of Baja California are different. Please refer to the expedition page for details, and feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Just send us an email, and we’ll get in touch. A 50% deposit is required to secure your booking.

To keep things crystal clear and ensure a smooth sailing experience, we’ve laid out these terms and conditions. Dive in for all the details here!

While travel insurance isn’t mandatory, we highly recommend it for your peace of mind.
